History of Eyup Sultan Mosque

Eyup Sultan Mosque was built in 1458 by Fatih Sultan Mehmed in the Eyupsultan district of Istanbul, over the grave of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the standard-bearer and host of the Prophet (PBUH). It is regarded as one of the most important pilgrimage and prayer sites in the Islamic world after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

This historic Istanbul mosque, where Ottoman sultans girded their swords during enthronement ceremonies, continues to welcome millions of visitors each year. Thousands of Muslims worship here at daily prayer times and visit the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari to pray.
