The Importance and Etiquette of Friday Prayer

<p>Friday prayer (Jumu'ah) is an important act of worship that is obligatory for every Muslim man. Almighty Allah states in Surah Al-Jumu'ah: "O you who believe! When the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business." Friday is the most virtuous day of the week, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. Adam was created on that day, he was admitted to Paradise on that day, and he was expelled from it on that day." Abandoning Friday prayer is a grave sin. <br/> <br/>Among the etiquettes of Friday prayer are performing a full ritual bath (ghusl), wearing clean and fine clothes, applying fragrance, and going to the mosque early. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave the glad tidings: "Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, wears fine clothes, applies fragrance, and goes to the mosque early earns the reward of a year of fasting and prayer for each step." Listening silently during the sermon and not talking are also among the important etiquettes of Friday prayer. <br/> <br/>The Friday sermon (khutbah) is a significant tool for education and guidance in the Islamic community. Imams inform the congregation by addressing current religious topics, social issues, and moral values in their sermons. Listening to the sermon earns reward, while talking during the sermon is disapproved. The Prophet said: "Whoever tells his companion to be quiet during the Friday sermon has engaged in idle speech." Therefore, one should listen to the sermon with great attention and humility. <br/> <br/>Among the recommended acts of worship on Friday are reading Surah Al-Kahf, sending abundant blessings upon the Prophet, and making abundant supplication. There is an hour on Friday during which any supplication made is accepted. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) indicated that this hour is between the afternoon prayer and the evening prayer. Every Muslim should strive to make the most of this blessed day. <br/> <br/>Friday prayer is also a symbol of unity and solidarity among Muslims. Coming together regularly at the mosque every week strengthens community awareness and increases social solidarity. Greeting friends and neighbors after Friday prayer, inquiring about their well-being, and spending time together are beautiful manifestations of Islamic brotherhood. Welcoming Friday like a day of celebration and benefiting from its blessings should be every Muslim's goal.</p>
