03 March 2026 - Eyüp Sultan Camii

Pre-Visit Preparation
If you are visiting Eyup Sultan for the first time, this guide will walk you through step by step. Preparing in advance is important for a good visit experience.
Clothing: Modest clothing appropriate for mosque and tomb visits is required. A headscarf is mandatory for women (available free at the mosque entrance). Men should prefer trousers covering the knees and sleeved shirts. Shoes are removed at the mosque entrance.
Timing: The ideal day to visit is a weekday. Between 09:00-11:00 in the morning is the calmest time. Fridays and weekends can be crowded. Extreme crowds are expected during Ramadan and holiday periods.
Duration: Allow at least 1 hour for the mosque and tomb visit. Plan a half day including Pierre Loti and surrounding area.
Visit Route
The recommended route is as follows:
1. Mosque courtyard: First enter the courtyard, see the historic plane tree, perform ablution, and pray two rakats of tahiyyat al-masjid.
2. Inside the mosque: Examine the mosque interior, dome decorations, tiles, and mihrab. Pray or make dua if you wish.
3. Tomb visit: There may be a queue at the tomb entrance; wait patiently. Be quiet inside, recite Fatiha and Ikhlas, and make dua. Walk backwards when leaving.
4. Cemetery and graveyard: Tour the historic cemetery around the mosque. You can see some of the finest examples of Ottoman calligraphy on the tombstones.
5. Pierre Loti Hill: Take the cable car or walk up the hill. Enjoy the Golden Horn view and have tea at the historic cafe.
Points to Note
- Photography is prohibited inside the tomb
- Do not speak loudly inside the mosque
- During prayer times, the mosque is prioritized for worshippers
- Keep your valuables with you
- You can feed the birds in the mosque courtyard (pigeons and turtledoves)
- Be cautious of beggars in the area; use official donation boxes
Visiting with Children
Eyup Sultan is also a suitable visit spot for families with children. The cable car is exciting for children. Nearby you'll find the Eyupsultan Toy Museum and parks. Stroller use is possible, but since the tomb interior is narrow, you may need to leave the stroller outside.
Dining
There are many restaurants, pide shops, and cafes around the mosque. Eyup's famous oven-baked pide is a must-try. Having Turkish coffee at the cafes on Pierre Loti Hill makes for a wonderful end to your visit.
Eyup Sultan is the spiritual heart of Istanbul. Your first visit will likely be one of the most peaceful experiences of your life. Stay calm, savor the moment, and benefit from the spiritual atmosphere of this blessed place.
