Importance of Funeral Prayer
Funeral prayer (Janazah) is a fard al-kifayah (communal obligation) in Islam. When performed by a group of Muslims, the responsibility is lifted from others. Eyup Sultan Mosque is one of the most preferred funeral prayer locations in Istanbul due to the spiritual significance of praying in the presence of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari.
Application and Required Documents
An application to the mosque administration must be made to have a funeral prayer performed. The required documents are:
Burial permit (obtained from the municipality)
Death certificate (from a hospital or health institution)
Copy of ID card
The body washing and shrouding process must be completed.
Prayer Times and Procedure
Funeral prayers at Eyup Sultan Mosque are generally performed after the noon (Zuhr) prayer. On busy days, funeral prayers may also be performed after the afternoon (Asr) prayer. A funeral prayer lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. Bringing the deceased to the mosque and placing them on the funeral stone is done under the guidance of mosque staff.

All funeral procedures are professionally managed in coordination with the municipality and the Presidency of Religious Affairs. Hearse services can also be organized.
