Practical guide for attending Friday prayer at Eyup Sultan Mosque, including prayer times and how to prepare.

Friday Prayer Time

Friday prayer time varies according to the season. It generally coincides with the noon prayer time. In winter months, Friday prayer is performed around 12:30-13:00, and in summer months around 13:00-13:30. It is recommended to follow the current prayer times set by the Presidency of Religious Affairs. Arriving at the mosque at least 30-45 minutes early is important for finding a place.

Preparation and Etiquette

Before Friday prayer, performing ghusl (full ablution) is Sunnah. Wearing clean and fine clothes and applying pleasant fragrance are also part of Friday etiquette. Ablution must be taken before entering the mosque; hot and cold water is available in the modern ablution area on the lower floor of the mosque. Four rakats of Friday's first sunnah are performed before the Friday prayer.

Khutbah and Sermon

Before Friday prayer, a sermon and khutbah are delivered. At Eyüp Sultan Mosque, the khutbah is delivered by the head imam of the mosque or scholars appointed by the Presidency of Religious Affairs. The sermon is generally about current religious topics, moral issues, and social problems. Not speaking and focusing on listening during the khutbah is required by Friday etiquette.

Crowd and Transportation Tips

Eyüp Sultan Mosque is one of Istanbul's most crowded Friday prayer venues. Especially in summer months and on religious occasions, the mosque can overflow. Latecomers may have to pray in the courtyard or outdoor areas. It is recommended to come by public transport and to be at the mosque at least one hour early. You can visit the tomb after the Friday prayer.
