Hosting a Mawlid at Eyup Sultan: Organization and Contact Info
22 January 2026 - Eyüp Sultan Camii

The Mawlid Tradition
Mawlid is the tradition of reciting "Vesiletun-Necat", a work written by Suleyman Celebi in the 15th century. Recited on occasions such as birth, circumcision, marriage, death, and other auspicious events, the Mawlid is one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Turkish-Islamic culture.
Having a Mawlid recited at Eyup Sultan Mosque is the most valuable and meaningful form of this tradition. The Mawlid recited in the spiritual presence of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari gives participants a deep sense of peace.
How to Arrange a Mawlid Recitation?
Contact: The date and time are determined by contacting the mosque imamate. Early reservation is recommended during busy periods (Ramadan, Mawlid Kandil).
Hafizes: The mosque's own hafizes can recite the Mawlid. It is also possible to bring a hafiz from outside.
Organization: Refreshments (lokma, sherbet, rose water) are prepared before and after the Mawlid. It is a nice tradition to also offer refreshments to the mosque congregation and those nearby.
Mawlid Program
A typical Mawlid program proceeds as follows:
- Opening with Quran recitation
- Recitation of the Mawlid al-Sharif (in sections)
- Sprinkling of rose water between each section
- Sending blessings upon the Prophet (Salawat)
- Closing with prayer
- Refreshments and conversation
The program lasts approximately 1.5-2 hours.
