Ramadan at Eyüp Sultan

The month of Ramadan creates a completely different spiritual atmosphere at Eyüp Sultan Mosque. The mosque and its surroundings are decorated with Ramadan ornaments, illuminated signs are hung between minarets, and thousands of people gather at this sacred place for iftar each evening. Ramadan at Eyüp Sultan is one of Istanbul's most authentic and peaceful Ramadan experiences.

Iftar Tables

Iftar tables are set up by the municipality and philanthropists around Eyüp Sultan Mosque. Free iftar meals are distributed to thousands of people. The tables set up in the mosque courtyard and surrounding streets bring together people from different segments of society. Before iftar, Quran recitation is listened to and communal prayers are made.

Tarawih Prayer and Mukabele

Throughout Ramadan, tarawih prayers are performed after the isha prayer. At Eyüp Sultan Mosque, tarawih is performed accompanied by the Quran recited in beautiful maqams by hafizes. During daytime hours, mukabele (Quran completion) programs are organized. The entire Quran is recited and completed in 30 days.

Sahur and Laylat al-Qadr

During the last ten days of Ramadan, Laylat al-Qadr revival programs are organized. On these nights, the mosque is open for worship until dawn. There is also activity around the mosque during sahur times. The Eid al-Fitr prayer is among the most crowded moments at the mosque; arriving early is recommended. Sweets are distributed after the Eid prayer.
