<p>Islamic civilization led the world in science and technology from the eighth to the fifteenth century. Muslim scientists made groundbreaking contributions in mathematics, medicine, chemistry, astronomy, physics, and engineering. This golden age was a direct result of Islam's value for knowledge and encouragement of the pursuit of learning.

<br/>Al-Khwarizmi was the founder of algebra, and the word "algorithm" derives from his name. Ibn Sina's "The Canon of Medicine" was used as a textbook in European universities for centuries. Ibn al-Haytham is considered the father of modern optics and was among the first scientists to use the scientific method.

<br/>Al-Biruni calculated the circumference of the earth, and Jabir ibn Hayyan laid the foundations of chemistry. Al-Jazari made pioneering inventions in robotics and automation. Ibn Khaldun is considered the founder of sociology. These scientists demonstrate the scale of Islamic civilization's contribution to world science.
