Getting from Istanbul's Asian side to Eyup Sultan Mosque: the direct Golden Horn ferry from Uskudar, Marmaray + the T5 tram, and the ferry + tram option from Kadikoy, with times and tips.

To get from Istanbul's Asian side to Eyup Sultan you need to cross the Bosphorus, but that can be the most beautiful part of the journey. The Golden Horn ferry that runs directly from Üsküdar to Eyup is one of Istanbul's least-known yet most enjoyable sea journeys.

From Üsküdar

Option 1: Golden Horn Ferry (Direct)

Şehir Hatları' Golden Horn line ferries depart from Üsküdar and call at Karaköy, Kasımpaşa, Fener, Balat, Hasköy, Ayvansaray and Sütlüce before reaching Eyup Pier. With all stops, the journey takes about 55 minutes. The mosque is a short walk from the pier.

  • The number of daily departures is limited (about 13-14 per day).
  • On Sundays and holidays the first departure may be later.
  • Timetables change with the season; check Şehir Hatları' current schedule before setting off.

Option 2: Marmaray + T5

  1. From Üsküdar, take Marmaray towards Halkalı and get off one stop later at Sirkeci.
  2. Walk from Sirkeci to Eminönü (a few minutes) and take the T5 tram.
  3. Get off at the Eyüpsultan Teleferik stop.

Total time: About 45 minutes to 1 hour. It is the fastest alternative if you have missed the ferry.

From Kadıköy

Option 1: Ferry + T5

  1. Take a ferry from Kadıköy Pier to Eminönü (about 20-25 minutes).
  2. At Eminönü, take the T5 tram and get off at Eyüpsultan Teleferik (about 20-25 minutes).

Total time: About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes including the transfer.

Option 2: Kadıköy - Eyup Golden Horn Services

Şehir Hatları also runs services from Kadıköy that enter the Golden Horn and call at Sütlüce and Eyup. These are direct but limited in number; check the current times when planning.

Option 3: M4 + Marmaray + T5

From Kadıköy you can take the M4 metro to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, transfer to Marmaray, get off at Sirkeci and take the T5 tram from Eminönü. It is a good alternative on days when ferries are cancelled due to bad weather.

From Other Districts on the Asian Side

For those coming from districts on the Marmaray line such as Bostancı, Pendik, Kartal and Gebze, the most practical route is to take Marmaray directly to Sirkeci and then the T5 tram from Eminönü. Those coming from Ümraniye, Ataşehir and Çekmeköy can reach Üsküdar by metro and use one of the options above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct bus from the Asian side to Eyup?
Instead of long bus journeys that depend on bridge traffic, we recommend using the ferry or Marmaray. These options are both faster and more predictable.

Do ferries run in bad weather?
Ferry services may be cancelled in storms or heavy fog. In that case you can use the Marmaray + T5 route.

The Last Step: From the Stop to the Mosque

For those arriving by the T5 tram, the closest stop to Eyup Sultan Mosque is Eyüpsultan Teleferik. From this stop it is a short walk to the mosque, the tomb and the Eyup bazaar; simply follow the signs or your map app. The lower station of the cable car to Pierre Loti Hill is also in this area. Those arriving by ferry reach the mosque with a short walk from Eyup Pier.

Important: The M7 metro line does not have a station next to Eyup Sultan Mosque. Metro travellers should transfer to the T5 tram at Alibeyköy station.

Before You Set Off

  • Get an Istanbulkart: The Istanbulkart is valid on metros, trams, buses and ferries. Card sale and top-up machines are available at airports, major stations and piers.
  • Check current information: Timetables and routes can change. Before travelling, check Metro Istanbul, Şehir Hatları (city ferries) or IETT, or use apps such as Moovit, Google Maps or İstanbul Senin.
  • Know the busy times: The area is very crowded before Friday prayer, on weekend afternoons, on holy nights (kandil) and during Eid holidays.
  • Plan around prayer times: If you want to arrive in time for a prayer, check our prayer times page. For tomb visiting hours, see Tomb Visiting Hours and Rules.
