Tajweed rules, reading etiquette, and practical tips for beginners starting to read the Holy Quran.

The Holy Quran is the final divine book sent by Almighty Allah to humanity, and it is a great responsibility for every Muslim to learn to read it. The first verse of Surah Al-Alaq begins with the command "Read!" — this command emphasizes the importance of knowledge and reading in Islam. Reading the Quran is not just an act of worship but also the honor of engaging with the word of Allah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it."
To begin reading the Holy Quran, one must first become familiar with the Arabic alphabet. The Arabic alphabet consists of twenty-eight letters, each with different points of articulation. Learning the Alif-Ba is the first step in the journey of Quran reading. Learning the articulation points (makharij) is of great importance for correct pronunciation of the letters. Today, many mosques and Quran courses organize adult education programs, and everyone can easily learn to read the Quran.
Tajweed is the science that teaches the rules for reading the Holy Quran correctly and beautifully. Knowledge of basic tajweed rules such as ikhfa, idgham, iqlab, and izhar is necessary for reading the Quran correctly. Rules of prolongation (madd), stopping marks (waqf), and places of pause (saktah) are also among the subjects that need to be learned. Learning the science of tajweed is a communal obligation (fard kifayah), but knowing enough tajweed to read the Quran correctly is necessary for every Muslim.
There are important points of etiquette to observe when reading the Holy Quran. Being in a state of ablution, facing the qiblah, saying bismillah, and reading with humility are among the basic etiquettes. Reflecting on the meaning of the Quran while reading and applying it to one's life is extremely important. Merely reading the words is not sufficient — understanding and living by what is read is the true goal.
Every Muslim should make time for Quran reading in their daily life. Reading the Quran regularly after the morning prayer or before sleeping is a beautiful habit. Completing the entire Quran (khatm) from beginning to end carries great reward. Even reading one page a day allows one to complete the Quran in approximately twenty months. What matters most is consistency and continuity. The Holy Quran will intercede for its reader both in this world and in the hereafter.
