A comprehensive guide about the importance, virtues, and role of prayer (salah) in a Muslim's life as one of the five pillars of Islam.

Prayer (salah) is one of the most fundamental acts of worship in Islam and is obligatory for every Muslim five times a day. Almighty Allah has commanded prayer in numerous verses of the Holy Quran and emphasized its importance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, it is stated: "Establish prayer, give zakat, and bow down with those who bow down." Prayer is considered the ascension (miraj) of the believer and is the strongest bond between the servant and their Lord.
The virtues of prayer are countless. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) compared prayer to a river flowing in front of one's door, asking whether any dirt would remain on a person who bathed in it five times a day. When the companions replied "No dirt would remain, O Messenger of Allah," the Prophet said: "This is like the five daily prayers; Allah erases sins through them." This hadith clearly demonstrates the power of prayer to cleanse sins.
Performing prayer provides great benefits not only spiritually but also for physical and mental health. Ablution cleanses the body, the prostration position increases blood flow to the brain, and regular prayer reduces stress and brings inner peace. Scientific research has also shown that people who worship regularly experience less stress and anxiety. Prayer, performed at specific times of the day, instills discipline and order in a Muslim's life.
Congregational prayer holds special importance and virtue. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Prayer performed in congregation is twenty-seven degrees superior to prayer performed individually." Praying in congregation at the mosque strengthens the bonds of brotherhood among Muslims, increases social solidarity, and reinforces the spirit of unity. The reward for performing the dawn and night prayers in congregation is particularly great.
Performing prayer with khushu (humility and concentration) — feeling in your heart that you are in the presence of Allah — is extremely important. In the opening verses of Surah Al-Mu'minun, it is stated: "Certainly the believers have succeeded. They who are during their prayer humbly submissive." Reflecting on the meanings of the surahs recited during prayer, feeling closeness to Allah during prostration, and distancing oneself from worldly preoccupations are fundamental elements of khushu. Every Muslim should strive to perform their prayers consistently, on time, and correctly throughout their lifetime.
