Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today we emphasize the importance of seeking knowledge. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." (Ibn Majah). The very first revelation to Prophet Muhammad was: "Read! In the name of your Lord who created." (Al-Alaq, 96:1)
Islam places knowledge at the highest level. Allah says: "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" (Az-Zumar, 39:9). And: "Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees." (Al-Mujadilah, 58:11)
Knowledge That Benefits
True knowledge is that which brings us closer to Allah and benefits humanity. The Prophet (pbuh) used to pray: "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, wholesome sustenance, and accepted deeds." (Ibn Majah)
Let us encourage learning in our families, support Islamic education, and seek knowledge throughout our lives. Knowledge without action is like a tree without fruit. May Allah grant us knowledge that benefits us and protect us from knowledge that does not. Amin.
