April 25, 2025 - Friday Sermon

Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today we honor the dignity of labor and hard work. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No one has ever eaten food better than that which he earned by the work of his own hands. The Prophet of Allah, David (peace be upon him), used to eat from the work of his own hands." (Bukhari)

Islam elevates work to the level of worship when done with sincerity and in lawful means. Allah says: "And say: Work, for Allah will see your deeds, and so will His Messenger and the believers." (At-Tawbah, 9:105)

The Sacredness of Honest Labor

The Prophet (pbuh) kissed the calloused hands of a companion who worked hard and said: "These are hands that Allah and His Messenger love." He also said: "No one earns a living better than the one who earns from the work of his own hands."

Honest work – whether manual labor, agriculture, trade, or professional service – is honorable in Islam. Begging when one is able to work is discouraged. Let us take pride in our work, perform it with excellence, and earn our living through halal means. May Allah bless the efforts of all workers. Amin.
