Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today we discuss shura – consultation – a principle that Islam has elevated to the highest level of governance and decision-making. Allah says: "And those who have responded to their Lord and established prayer and whose affair is determined by consultation among themselves." (Ash-Shura, 42:38)
Even the Prophet (peace be upon him), despite receiving divine guidance, was commanded to consult: "And consult them in the matter." (Al Imran, 3:159). This shows that consultation is not just good practice – it is a divine directive.
The Wisdom of Consultation
Consultation brings collective wisdom, prevents individual errors, builds trust, and creates a sense of shared ownership. The Prophet (pbuh) consulted his companions on matters of war and peace, and he often accepted their opinions over his own inclination.
Let us practice shura in our families – involving our spouses and children in decisions. Let us practice it in our communities – listening to diverse voices and respecting different perspectives. A leader who consults earns respect; one who dictates breeds resentment. May Allah guide us to make wise decisions through consultation. Amin.
