Protecting the Environment: Safeguarding the Trust

Eyüp Sultan Camii İmamı

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today we address a vital responsibility: protecting the environment as a sacred trust from Allah. The Almighty says: "It is He who made you vicegerents on earth." (Al-An'am, 6:165). This vicegerency (khilafah) carries the duty of safeguarding creation.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to respect nature and avoid waste. He said: "Do not waste water even if you are at a running stream." He also said: "If the Day of Judgment comes and one of you has a seedling in his hand, let him plant it." (Ahmad)

Our Responsibility as Stewards

Islam forbids corruption and destruction on earth. Allah warns: "And do not cause corruption on earth after it has been set in order." (Al-A'raf, 7:56). Polluting water sources, wasting natural resources, and harming animals are acts contrary to Islamic teachings.

Each of us can contribute: by conserving water, reducing waste, planting trees, and teaching our children to respect nature. These are not just environmental actions but acts of worship that please Allah. Let us be responsible stewards of this beautiful earth that Allah has entrusted to us. May Allah help us preserve His creation. Amin.
