Competing in Goodness: Charity and Good Deeds

Eyüp Sultan Camii İmamı

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Allah the Almighty calls upon us to compete in goodness. He says: "So race to all that is good." (Al-Baqarah, 2:148). This verse invites us to a noble competition – not one of worldly gain, but of charitable deeds and righteous actions.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Protect yourselves from the Fire even if it is with half a date in charity." (Bukhari and Muslim). This shows that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is insignificant in the sight of Allah.

The Rewards of Charity

Charity does not decrease wealth; rather, it increases it in blessings. The Prophet (pbuh) said: "Charity does not diminish wealth." (Muslim). Whether it is a monetary donation, feeding the hungry, helping a neighbor, or even a warm smile – all are forms of sadaqah.

Let us seize every opportunity to do good. Help those in need, support our mosques and schools, sponsor orphans, and give generously. Allah promises: "Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in reward." (Al-Muzzammil, 73:20). May Allah make us among those who race toward goodness. Amin.
