Khalilullah - The Friend of Allah

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is one of the most frequently mentioned prophets in the Holy Quran and is known by the title "Khalilullah," meaning the Friend of Allah. As one of the Ulul-Azm prophets, Ibrahim was born into a society in Mesopotamia that worshipped idols. Ibrahim smashed the idols his people worshipped, leaving only the largest one intact, and told his people, "Perhaps this big one did it — ask him." His people decided to throw him into the fire, but Allah commanded the fire, "O fire! Be cool and safe for Ibrahim!" and Ibrahim emerged from the fire unharmed. Ibrahim, together with his son Ismail, built the Kaaba. He was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to Allah's command, and he passed this great trial successfully. Allah rewarded this submission by sending down a ram in place of Ismail. Throughout his life, Ibrahim went through many severe trials and maintained his devotion to Allah in all of them. For this reason, the Quran describes him as "a nation unto himself."
