Sacrifice and Submission

Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him) was the first son of Ibrahim, born to his wife Hajar. Regarded as the ancestor of the Arab peoples, Ismail is described in the Holy Quran as "true to his promise." Hajar ran seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa seeking water for her thirsty infant son. During this time, by Allah's mercy, the water of Zamzam gushed forth. This event forms the origin of the Sa'y ritual performed by pilgrims today. The most well-known story of Ismail is when his father Ibrahim was commanded in a dream to sacrifice him. Ismail showed great submission, saying, "O my father! Do what you are commanded. If Allah wills, you will find me among the patient." Allah sent a ram and accepted it as a sacrifice in place of Ismail. Ismail, together with his father Ibrahim, built the Kaaba and invited people to perform Hajj. His submission and patience serve as an example for all believers until the Day of Judgment.
